History
The Food Pantry for Immaculate Heart of Mary / Pope John Paul II Catholic Church has 9-10 volunteers depending upon the time of the year. We started giving out food boxes in 2005 for a few people in need. It grew to 3-4 boxes a week in 2006 and has been growing at an exponential rate ever since.
By 2010, our parishioners could no longer support our needs and we were paying retail prices at our local grocery stores, so we joined “Feeding America” through our local state representative, Care and Share Food Bank which is located in Colorado Springs and Pueblo, CO. After complying with all of their food handling requirements and other rules and regulations, we changed our status from Level 4 to Level 1 within a year and are now eligible to purchase some canned food and frozen meats at a reduced rate, as well as receiving fresh produce in their monthly shipments.
Our need has continued to grow, and we have found some very generous and Christian organizations to help support those in need in Archuleta County and adjoining area including northwest New Mexico.
The numbers have increased from 452 boxes in 2011, to 1,333 boxes in 2012, and 1,870 boxes in 2013. We have again hit a new high in 2014, as we already have 1,674 boxes in the first 10 months which translates to spending more than $50,000 in food boxes this year.
We need to include a heartfelt thank you to everyone for their support!
